How a VoteStead election works

Six steps for the board. Four steps for each owner. Nothing opens early and nothing is counted twice.

For the board

Plan the dates around the notice period in your governing documents.

  1. Set up

Add the association, its formation date and the election dates. VoteStead shows which state rule pack applies.

  2. Add questions

Enter each question with its candidates or choices, the number of picks allowed and whether write-ins count.

  3. Choose key holders

Name the people who hold the 3 key shares. Each gets a one-time link to view and save a share.

  4. Launch

When the checklist is complete, voting opens at the time you set. Invitations go out by email and text, and you print mailed notices for everyone else.

  5. Watch quorum

See units voted against the quorum target. Automatic reminders go to units that have not voted, and you send extra reminders any time.

  6. Count and certify

After voting closes, 2 key holders enter their shares. VoteStead opens the sealed ballots, counts them and produces a results report for your inspector to certify.

For each owner

Works on a phone, tablet or computer with no app to install.

  1. Get the link

The invitation arrives by email or text. Owners without either receive a mailed notice with an access code and PIN.

  2. Confirm with a code

VoteStead sends a 6-digit code to the email or phone on file, so only the owner votes for the unit.

  3. Mark and review

The owner marks the ballot, reviews each choice and casts it. The ballot is sealed on the owner's device first.

  4. Keep the receipt

The receipt shows a tracker code. After voting closes, the owner checks that code on the Check a ballot page.
